In August, the POINT will graduate 11 Palm River trainees with their Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate. For six weeks, the participants met twice a week at the POINT office for classes on how to become a nursing assistant, a growing job field that is increasingly in demand.

CNA’s are vital members of the nursing profession and the health care team. They provide direct bedside nursing care and are often the best pipeline to information from and about patients.

With funding and support from the Allegany Franciscan Foundation and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County, participants only had to pay a nominal, one-time fee of $25, Class materials and the cost of the Florida State exam were included. The POINT also donated funds to give each graduating participant a set of medical scrubs as they set out to secure jobs in the field.

Lucy Stewart, R.N., CNA instructor for the past two years, believes the training is focused on the skills of the person. “Giving of yourself by caring for others is the best feeling in the world and to top this you can earn a living for it!”
